Johannesburg, South Africa, April 2, 2010:
The Eastern Cape town of Mthatha is gearing up for a weekend-long soccer festival, courtesy of mobile operator Cell C.
Teams from around the OR Tambo municipality are set to compete for top honours in the Eastern Cape leg of the popular Cell C Easter Soccer Tournament. OR Tambo tournament organiser, Wiseman Sigaqa, says this year’s event promises to be a great success.
"The annual Cell C sponsored tournament is a big hit in the province. People always look forward to a holiday filled with fun, games, entertainment, and networking," says Sigaqa.
"People are still coming through to the grounds and we are expecting large crowds as from Saturday. Most people like to come when things hot up. The games will be moved to the Rotary grounds from Mthatha grounds, from tomorrow," adds Sigaqa.
Meanwhile in Idutywa, just a few kilometres from East London, teams were ushered into the Nghumbela sports grounds with cheers and ululations from the crowds. The participating 16 teams go head to head from today, Easter Friday, until Monday, when a victorious champion will emerge.
"We are very pleased and grateful to Cell C for sponsoring such an event in our community. This shows their commitment in reaching out to the community. The Cell C branding that is here also lends credence to the tournament. People now understand that this is not a fly-by night event," says Andile Ndengezi, Amathole region tournament organiser.
