Despite the inclement weather conditions, over 2 000 enthusiastic soccer fans braved the chilling conditions to witness proceedings on the opening day of the 2010 Cell C Easter Soccer Tournament at KwaMahlobo grounds in Meadowlands, Soweto.
"We are relieved that so many people turned out despite the bad weather conditions. The tournament also started on a high note, and the vibe at the ground was good, and encouraging," says Soweto tournament organising committee member, Dlongolo Ntenjwa.
It has been persistently raining in Gauteng since Wednesday.
In the opening match in Meadowlands, Ndofaya XI beat Chelsea 3-1 on penalties, after the game had ended in a 1-all stalemate.
Meanwhile in Randfontein, the sun was out, and so were hundreds of fans, who tuned out to cheer on their favourite teams.
However, unlike in Soweto, there were no shortage of goals in the West Rand. The pipe opener between Zedzed and Bekkersdaal was a goal feast, as the two teams drew 3-3 to take the game into penalties. In the end, Zedzed moved into the next round after winning 5-4 on penalties.
Randfontein organising committee member, Abe Motoedi says he’s very happy with the support the tournament has received from the community. "We are excited about the turn out. The level of competition in the opening games has also been superb," added Montoedi.
The Alex tournament also kicked off with loads of celebrities spotted in the crowd. Cell C ambassadors Teenage Dladla and Shakes Kungwane reported that they were highly impressed with the talent on display.
