So competive were the finals that a staggering 9 of 16 games went to penalties. Four finals were delayed due to the bad weather, however the crowds that braved the cold spell witnessed a staggering 35 goals in the 16 games.
The first winner crowned was in the KZN region of Osizweni, where Juventus beat Siyabonga FC 1-0. The other KZN winners where in Umlazi where Trouble Tigers beat Natal Sun 1-0. In Esikhaleni, Golden Chiefs edged Protech 7-5 on penalties, after the fulltime score was 2-2. In Imbali, Pietermarizburg, the 2nd semi final was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. African Stars will contest the final against either Nifa Stars or Young Spash next Saturday.
The Eastern Cape tournaments all went very well with Holly Kings being crowned champs in Queenstown. In Indutywa, Bush Bucks beat FC Buffalo 1-0 in a keenly contested final.Just north in Mthatha, Happy Brothers beat Bizana Lucky Stars 3-1, to walk away with the title. Cell C ambassador Teenage Dladla who attended the finals in Queenstown was overwhelmed with joy. "These people are simply great and what Cell C has stimulated here, is simply fantastic."
In the Free State, Odendaalrus was abuzz with excitement as local favourites Bellson United thumped Days FC 3-1, in front of a packed stadium. QwaQwa and Botshabelo events were postponed due to the rain and these will be completed this weekend.
Heidedal, Mangaung, saw a fantastic final played before an excited fullhouse. Heidedal United eventually beat Bubchu United 9-8 on penalties, after the score was 1-1 after extra time. Bloemfontein Celtic who were present most of the time, were so impressed tha coach Owen da Gama has offered a full practise match against a Cell C Heidedal selction, next Saturday. Botshabelo was the real surprise packet and an estimated 11 000 spectators braved the finals, which unfortunately also had to be postponed due to the foul weather. Chelsea will take on arch rivals Chipolopolo in this weekends final.
Kimberley’s De Beers stadium played host to a superbly organised event that was attended by the mayor. Ajax beat Macerana 5-4 on penalties (fulltime 0-0) and walked off with a whopping R60 000.
Mpumalanga can be very proud in that there events were also brilliantly organised and very well supported. In Bushbuckridge, Combination FC beat Real Rangers 4-3 on penalties after the fulltime score was 1 a piece. The game was played at the spectacular Thulamahashe Stadium. Nyzamazane Celtic defended their crown and defeated City Movers in the Nelspruit final.
Limpopo’s Ga-Dikgale tournament was also very well arranged by Nakedi Lekota which saw Shining Stars crowned the champions after the biggest win of all the finalists. They resoundingly beat DETERMINE Brothers 4-1 in front of an excited crowd. The Ga-Mashashane tournament was won by Stone Breakers.
The Gauteng events were also phenomally well supported and local organisers had loads of praise for Cell C, who have now supported them for the 4th consecutive year. In Alex, the final was played in the newly revamped Alex stadium and was won by local favourites FC Alex, who deafeated Cosmos 1-0. The event was well supported by the local Alex FM and attracted a host of celebrities including the 1996 Bafana Bafana star, Mark Williams.
The Mamelodi event was unfortunately delayed to next weekend where Dream Team will play the winner between No Fear and Galacticos.
Soweto’s Meadowlands has to be the cultural hub of township football, and yesterday was another shining example of real community spirit. The finalists were given a guard of honour by the local Soweto bike club, which created for a great atmosphere. Black Poison beat locals Meadowlands Joy 2-0 in an exciting final.
Trapzone won the Cell C Sidlala Sonke Randfontein event for the second consecutive year after beating the Soweto Dream Team 2-1, in a pulsating final. One just had to be there to experience the fantastic carnival atmosphere that epitamises Community Football at its BEST.
A big plus to these events was the new Nike Starter pack and its innovative activations around the country. SAFA’s Joseph Mkonza said that he saw more ball-jugglers that has so much talent that he couldn’t believe it. Hell, we have talent in this country"
Cell C would like to cogratulate all the winners and wish them well with the upcoming draw when two teams will be rewarded with SWC tickets.
